AFFORDING THERAPY AT KULA

Care should feel
more reachable.

Kula Wellness Group is a private-pay practice. We also work to create additional pathways to care through reduced-fee therapy, out-of-network reimbursement, therapy groups, workshops, community programming, and free educational resources.

OUR APPROACH TO ACCESS

Access is bigger than a sliding scale.

We believe increasing access to mental-health support involves more than lowering the price of one service. It can mean offering reduced-fee therapy, creating lower-cost group experiences, bringing mental-health conversations into community spaces, sharing free education, and helping people discover other organizations and resources when those may better meet their needs.

We cannot make every Kula service affordable for every person. What we can do is continue looking for thoughtful ways to make care, education, connection, and useful resources more reachable.

WAYS TO ACCESS SUPPORT

Understanding your options.

Different forms of support serve different needs. Here is how Kula's current options fit together.

Different support serves different purposes. Therapy groups may be psychotherapy when identified as such. Workshops, newsletters, social-media content, community events, and educational resources are not substitutes for individualized mental-health treatment when clinical care is needed.
PRIVATE-PAY THERAPY

Why Kula is out of network.

Kula Wellness Group is not in network with insurance plans. We made this choice so treatment decisions can remain primarily between you and your clinician — including the focus, pacing, and approach to your care.

Insurance can be an important and valuable way to access mental-health treatment, and private-pay therapy is not the right fit for every person or family. At Kula, remaining out of network allows us to build our clinical services around individualized care rather than the requirements of a particular insurance network.

If your health plan includes out-of-network mental-health benefits, you may still be eligible for reimbursement for part of the cost of therapy through a superbill.

OUT-OF-NETWORK BENEFITS

Using a superbill for possible reimbursement.

A superbill is an itemized document you submit directly to your insurance company when you want to request reimbursement through your plan's out-of-network benefits.

How it works

Your Kula therapist is not in network with any insurance company. However, if your plan includes out-of-network mental-health benefits, Kula can provide a superbill upon request that you may submit directly to your insurer for possible retroactive reimbursement.

Reimbursement amounts depend on your specific plan, deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-network benefits. Receiving a superbill from Kula Wellness Group does not guarantee reimbursement. All reimbursement decisions are made by your insurance provider.

When contacting your insurance company, you may want to ask specifically about your out-of-network behavioral-health benefits and reimbursement for the CPT codes above. Coverage can vary by plan.

WHY THE FIRST SUPERBILL TAKES TIME

A diagnosis is required for insurance reimbursement.

All superbills require an active mental-health diagnosis to be listed. At Kula, we take diagnostic decisions seriously. A diagnosis may become part of a person's health record, and we believe clinicians should have sufficient time to understand a client before assigning one when clinically appropriate.

For that reason, Kula's practice policy is to complete approximately 4–8 sessions before issuing the first superbill. This reflects both the ethical need for adequate assessment and our respect for the sensitive nature of diagnostic labels.

After the first superbill is issued, your therapist can provide ongoing superbills on a monthly basis, upon request.

A diagnosis is based on clinical assessment and cannot be assigned solely for the purpose of obtaining insurance reimbursement.

REDUCED-FEE THERAPY

Kula Scholarship Program

Kula's Scholarship Program allows us to offer a limited number of income-based reduced-fee therapy spaces for clients experiencing significant financial barriers to care.

01

Apply

Complete the Scholarship Program application so we can understand your household income, financial circumstances, and goals for therapy.

02

Review

Applications are considered alongside financial circumstances, household needs, clinical fit, therapist availability, and the limited number of reduced-fee spaces available.

03

Next Steps

A member of the Kula team will follow up after review. Completing an application does not guarantee a reduced-fee placement.

04

Renewal

Approved reduced-fee arrangements are periodically reviewed so eligibility can be reassessed as financial circumstances and availability change.

Current program expectations

  • Scholarship spaces are limited and depend on clinician availability and appropriate therapeutic fit.
  • Current applications are reviewed based on factors such as household income, employment, family size, financial support, therapy goals, and overall financial circumstances.
  • Clients receiving a scholarship rate are expected to attend therapy consistently and follow Kula's cancellation policies.
  • Current program materials describe an initial commitment to regular weekly or biweekly therapy, with eligibility periodically reassessed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about cost, insurance, and reduced-fee care.

Financial decisions around therapy can be confusing. These are some of the most common questions we hear.

Does Kula Wellness Group take insurance?
No. Kula Wellness Group is a private-pay practice and is not in network with insurance plans. Clients pay Kula directly for therapy services.
Can I still use my out-of-network insurance benefits?
Possibly. If your plan includes out-of-network behavioral-health benefits, you may be able to submit a superbill to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Reimbursement is determined entirely by your insurance plan and is not guaranteed.
Why do I need a diagnosis for a superbill?
Insurance companies require an active diagnosis for reimbursement. Because diagnostic labels are clinically and personally significant, Kula's practice policy is to complete approximately 4–8 sessions before issuing the first superbill so your clinician has adequate time for assessment.
Will Kula contact my insurance company for me?
No. Kula therapists do not bill insurers, communicate with insurance companies regarding individual claims, or dispute reimbursement decisions. Clients are responsible for submitting superbills and communicating directly with their insurer.
Does applying for the Scholarship Program guarantee a reduced rate?
No. Scholarship spaces are limited and depend on financial need, clinician availability, appropriate therapeutic fit, and the number of reduced-fee spaces available at the time of application.
Are workshops and free resources the same as therapy?
No. Workshops, community events, newsletters, social-media content, and educational resources may provide useful information and support, but they are not a substitute for individualized psychotherapy when clinical treatment is needed.
What if I need therapy but still cannot afford Kula's rates?
Please reach out anyway. If Kula's standard or reduced-fee options are not financially workable for you, we will do our best to help connect you with a lower-fee clinician, community mental-health provider, nonprofit organization, training clinic, or another resource that may be able to offer care at a lower cost. We cannot guarantee availability with an outside provider, but we do not want cost to be the end of the conversation when you are looking for support.
